Location:
The cottage at La Platriere is situated in the Department of Allier in the region of Auvergne. Being close to the borders of Centre and Burgundy it is ideally placed for the visitor to explore 3 different regions of France, thereby offering something for everyone. La Platriere is situated just off the D64, 4km from the town of Lurcy-Levis in the direction of Valigny. Far from the madding crowds of the south, this area has everything you need all within easy distance; for example, if you like lakes, you need only go 5kms to the lakes in the Troncais forest, ideal for fishing, swimming, sailing, pedalos, canoeing and kayaking. At Etang Goule (only 5 mins away in the car) you can sunbathe on the beach, swim in the lake (there is also a waterslide for the kids), hire pedalos, canoes, kayaks or a sail boat. You can book lessons for sailing too. You may like to go llama trekking around the lake, or horseriding in the forest...there are 20kms of tracks for cycling, horseriding, and walking. Nearby, too is the river Allier, this beautiful river is considered one of the last wild rivers of France, with a host of natural wildlife and birds. You can take a canoe on a guided tour and enjoy the wonders of this river. Situated in the Bourbonnais, there are hundreds of castles, fortresses and chateaux in the area to visit, also medieval villages which throughout the summer months hold medieval festivals and spectacles. Visit historic Souvigny in July/August when they hold a week-long medieval festival. Folklore music is popular in this region, and during June each year there is an international folklore festival in Lurcy-Levis which is a week-long event with music and dance representations from several countries, culminating in gala performances with traditional costume and local produce. Also near is the Cultures of the World Festival which is 10 days duration in July again with many different countries participating in a festival of dancing and music. Food and wine lovers will be pleasantly surprised by this region. Visit vineyards whereby you can taste and purchase at a good price excellent wines. Locally there are some excellent restaurants and auberges, and of course, Auvergne is the cheese basket of France, so you will be spoilt trying all the different cheeses of the region. Further afield are the volcanoes in the 2 national parks of Auvergne, where you can visit extinct volcanoes, gorges and beautiful scenery, and for the more adventourous where you can paraglide, or take a hot air balloon over the volcanoes.
